Forum: GratefulDead Subject: How To Make An Old Head Smile

This just happened a couple of minutes ago and I thought I'd share.

A couple of weeks ago I discovered a fellow "Stealth Head" here at work (Stealth Head would be one of those folks who prompt a "I never would have guessed" reaction). Turns out he goes WAYYY back to the days of the boys playing on the back of a flatbed truck in San Fran (he's on of those types who has no interest in retiring). Well, like many of the older among us, he hasn't kept up with the commercial releases of the "Digital Dead", instead more than happy with his aging collection of Maxells. We had started to talk about our shared love of the band when he started to wax poetic about his trip through Europe in '72. I casually said "You must have been so happy with the recent release" and he replied "What commercial release?". Needless to say the next day I showed up at his cube with a 32GB stick drive with the entire release. "You mean this has EVERY show and EVERY song from the entire tour?", he asked. "Why, yes," I replied, "Yes it does.". "Including Bickershaw?". Again I said "Yes". "Check this out", and he pulls up a pic on his PC of an ad for the festival:

.

At that point I tell him "Go ahead, put the drive in and take a listen." The drive goes in, he puts on some headphones and hits play.

The smile that grew on his face was truly a look that is as close to pure joy as you can get with your clothes on. There is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert. Even 40+ years later. At least I'm not the only one at work now with a demolished work space.

Aside from the extraordinary phenomenon of being able to share polished commercial releases with and old 'Dead-van-Winkle', I think the mere discovery of a fellow aficianado is, in itself, a cause celebre in this day...down here in Appalachia, I'd be downright speechless if someone knowledgably inquired about the iconic stickers on my vehicle...Peace/Katie

"Dead Van Winkle", love that. That was me and it took this place to fully reawaken the Head in me after a few years of serious napping.

I'm guessing from you poster name (welcome, by the way) that you hail from the Bluegrass State. Got some family outside of Berea and I have to say that other than Maine, KY is my favorite place East of the Mississippi River. And not only for the beverages.

One of the coolest things I've read in a good long while. Kudos to both the old and not so young head...

Bingo. Sure, I miss the concerts and Jerry's playing, but as I age I find myself missing the human part of it all; the gathering before shows in the parking lot, trading stories, some true and some seriously embellished, laughing, perhaps sucking down some nitrous or some other things, meeting new best friends, catching up with old ones and just "being" in a group of people who were all there for the exact same reason. Well, other than the later years when many were there simply to see if they could set a record for the most chemical substances ingested in a set period of time and then expel gastric effluvium on other peoples footwear. This place for me is priceless not just for the music, but almost moreso for the people. The connections I've made over the years while sitting on the back of my old Olds station wagon or taking part in an online listening party have done more for my soul than most other things in life (wife and kids not withstanding). Kudos to all of you for just showing up, even if you don't have much to say; your presence here speaks volumes.

As I was sayin to Rob, Arb, & elb, this place just keeps getting warmer & fuzzier...

And, yup--you'll never know how much more it means to me in the spirit of "just showing up"...sometimes, that's a real accomplishment.

;)

That "warmer and fuzzier" feeling is probably the result of a diminished commitment to personal grooming, but lets not split hairs.

I think you and this gentlemen would get along quite well. He asked me what I was listenting to and as soon as I mentioned 1979 he got a look on his face like I had just offered him a plate of dead lemur.

I'm scared s**tless to ask him about Cream.

You two should organize and start doing office demo/renovation?

That was a pretty cool story.

Oh yeah, lemur consomme isn't bad with a nice peaty Islay single malt.

I suggested that, but he said that when consuming any Dead Post-'74 he usually went with a frothy mug of aged wildebeast urine.

I've got some work to do with this one.
